We are happy to announce our new browser extension! While there are many visible differences between it and the original browser extension, we believe you will find this to be a much more useful and powerful tool!
Why the new extension?
The browser extension needed some big changes behind-the-scenes to meet the evolving requirements and restrictions of Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Rather than just making the minimum changes needed, we decided to take this opportunity to re-envision the extension entirely, in order to make it more efficient, more accurate, and easier to use.
Some of the improvements include:
Better person-detection for integrated ATS's
No more having to close and reopen the extension to detect the candidate profile you are viewing!
Better scraping
More accurate than ever when pulling information from the candidate profile you are viewing!
Resizable
No more having to open Grayscale in another tab to have a better view of Reports or other pages that were too large to display properly!
Persists even when changing tabs
Even if you change tabs, the extension will stay open and right there with you, preventing you from losing your place or losing the message you were in the middle of typing!
And more 🚀
Head over to Getting Started: The Grayscale Browser Extension for the step-by-step instructions on how to enable the new browser extension.
Let's get started!
Grayscale 'g' in the way? You can move it!
The Grayscale 'g' can now be moved up or down on the page. It will even remember its position if you close and reopen the page!
Simply click and hold on the handle (the 6 dots under the 'g'), and slide the tab to the desired position on the side of the page, and release!
Opening & Closing the extension
There are now a few different ways to open and close the extension.
To open:
Left-click the Grayscale 'g' on the side of the page, OR
Left-click the Grayscale icon in the extension tray of your browser, OR
Right-click anywhere on the webpage, and left-click "Open Grayscale" from the context menu that pops up
To close:
Left-click the 'X' in the top-right corner of the extension panel, OR
Left-click the "Close side panel" icon in the extension tray of your browser
While you can open the extension by clicking the Grayscale 'g' on the side of the page, clicking that tab again will not close the side panel.
The side panel
The biggest change in the new extension is that it now opens as a side panel of your browser, rather than an overlay of the current webpage.
As a side panel, it can be resized by clicking and dragging the edge of the panel. This eliminates the need to open Grayscale in a separate tab to have a better view of Reports, the Talent Pool, Hiring Hub, etc...!
Another benefit of the side panel, is that it stays open even if you change tabs! Writing a message to a candidate, but need to grab information from another page in your ATS or even from an email? Not a problem! Since the side panel stays open, you won't lose your place!
Want to have the side panel open on the left side of the page instead of the right? If you are using Google Chrome, you can follow the steps in this article to make that happen!
Unfortunately, Microsoft Edge does not allow the side panel to be moved, so this only applies to those using Google Chrome.
Detecting candidate profiles
Just like the previous extension, the new extension can detect when you are on a candidate's profile in your ATS, and will open directly to that candidate's conversation if it exists, or will prompt you to add the candidate to Grayscale if they don't already exist (for example, if you are using a non-integrated ATS).
Jump to person
Previously, if you had the extension open before you navigated to a candidate's profile in your ATS, you would have to close and reopen the extension for it to display the candidate conversation. This is now a thing of the past!
The new extension can detect when you open a candidate profile in your ATS, and will give you the option to jump to that person in Grayscale without having to close and reopen the side panel! You can even opt to have it always automatically jump to the person by enabling the "Don't ask again" toggle.
If you have previously enabled the "Don't ask again" toggle, but would like to change back to Grayscale asking each time, you can clear your browser's cookies and cache to reset this.
